How to Practice

  • Start with Scale Degrees — relative pitch is more useful than absolute pitch. Learn to hear notes in context.
  • Foundation first — master each exercise at Foundation level before moving up. Speed comes from familiarity, not rushing.
  • Sing what you hear — before selecting an answer, try to sing or hum the sound. This engages your inner ear.
  • Listen for function, not labels — Chord Function, Cadences, and Secondary Dominants train you to hear what a chord does, not just what it is.
  • Use the insights — when you get one wrong, read the hint and replay the sound. Connect the theory to the sound.
  • Use headphones — you need to hear overtones, not just the fundamental. Laptop speakers lose the colour that distinguishes chord qualities.
